Sitcoms and Politics

Well looke here you are right on time. Been almost a month since your last visit so you knew you should visit your old grandpa again, huh?

Ah now don’t look ashamed boy. At least ya show up once in a while which is more than can be said for a lot of your family.

What have I been doing? Well what else can an old fart like me do all day. Just sit and watch TV that’s what. Mostly them sitcoms and the news. Though both are about the same. Same old jokes done over and over again. Only the news is real.

Oh now how many times I got to tell you to stop worrying about that. You don’t really expect anything different do you? One thing a person can always depend on politicians and advertisers will always lie to you as much as you let em.

I remember Will Rodgers. You know about him? Course not he’s not a video game character so how would you. Well Will was what they used to call a political humorist. Always dressed up as a cowboy with a rope on stage and make jokes about things. Used to run for President every election as a gag. Said the most important thing to him was to tell the truth. Since he reasoned any politician could never really keep more than one campaign promise that’s all he ever made. That he would leave office a rich man.

With all the angry people in this country pulling every which way but together how else can you get elected but to lie? You understand? There’s no way any sane person could expect us to be fighting wars all over the world, have social security, and paved roads, and cut taxes at the same time. Which is why the American political scene has always been anything but sane.

Oh democracy smocracy. What we have is a system of one upsmanship where no body listens to anybody else. How can you have democracy when people don’t listen to each other. To get along in life you don’t have to like a fella but you do have to listen to him.

Ah it all work itself out always does. Some folks will win, some will lose, some will come out better than others for a while but things will keep on goin.’ Always have and just like those sitcoms I been watchin things don’t really change all that much. The characters change but the plots and joke lines stay pretty much the same.

That’s what folks never seem to be able to understand. Doesn’t matter who wins or who loses, or even what kind of weekly ratings the show gets, in the long run it’s the way you act that people remember.
