God Just Ain't That Simple
the grumpy old man returns

Well nephew good to see you. Good to see anybody these eyes don't work like they used to you know.

Go ahead have a seat and let me get a look at you. No, don't remember much about your family. Hardly remember you. Still a stockbroker? Oh, that didn't work out so well... Still a Republican, least you dress like one. Only preachers and undertakers wear a tie when they visit us folks as Sleepy Dull Retirement Acres.

Now don't be embarrassed, about the tie I mean, about being a Republican your on your own. What do you mean you don't want to argue politics? Hell, arguing's about the only physical excitement we get around here.

Guess we could argue religion but for you conservatives that's one in the same as politics. At least from what I see on the TV lately. You got Pat Robertson who wants to nuke the state department and now this General Boykin fellow who thinks he's closer to God than Jesus. Is this my imagination or do you Republicans like to show off the dumbest people in your ranks?

Seems the more seriously people take the Bible the less they know about it. Do you think them folks even read it? You'd think anybody that spent much time in the scriptures would know that God is not as simple as people today make him out to be. You can't read God like the Sunday morning paper.

If God was really as close to their aims as these folks think, we wouldn't be in the mess we is in. I think they are confusing God's patience with the Almighty's pleasure.

Oh really? Well when's the last time you felt good about this country's government? Come on be honest. Exactly! Never! And when people do start feeling good about government they're just around the corner from getting their teeth knocked out. Take it from an old man, government never has been that good and never will be that good. Only God is good. Think it says that somewhere in the Bible. And God is so good that no government, nor no person, will ever be able to stand doing things the Devine way in public office. Most of the time government is worried about it's own survival and people get real, real nervous when it claims to be backed by God.

That goes for Democrats as well as Republicans by the way. Which ain't to say government doesn't do some good things, it does. But usually the good comes from mistake or because the weeds are afraid of getting mowed out of office. In fact, the best thing about our form of government is that it trusts nobody, and can be changed if enough people get upset about something. But close to God? Only if you think God loves people driving bigger cars and living in bigger houses than poor folks.

Oh, got to go, huh? Seems like that's always the case with my relatives these days. Don't know why folks can't spend much time with me.
